Harley to celebrate 110th anniversary in 2013

Harley-Davidson Inc. will celebrate 110 years of motorcycles and riding experiences with an array of global events and activities in 2013.

Among the events during the year-long celebration will be a rally in Rome, Italy, June 13-16, and a massive party over Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29-Sept. 1, in Milwaukee.
The anniversary celebrations every five years have become a tradition for Harley riders and a boost for the Milwaukee tourism industry.
Harley-Davidson also will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) globally, including during the Labor Day weekend in Milwaukee in 2013. H.O.G., the official riding club of the Motor Company, boasts about 1 million members worldwide.
"Harley-Davidson is synonymous with adventure, passion and the experience of the open road," said Mark-Hans Richer, Harley-Davidson senior vice president and chief marketing officer. "For this 110th celebration, our customers all around the world - with our support - are going to be taking everything to the next level and making their own history."
Information on housing options in Milwaukee and Rome is available at www.harley-davidson.com/110. Additional details about the global 110th anniversary will be announced in the coming months.

Harley-Davidson Inc. also announced the introduction of two new motorcycle models, the Seventy-Two and the Softail Slim, each inspired by current trends in the American garage-built custom motorcycle scene.
Both new models are mid-year additions to the 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle line-up, and will be available immediately at authorized Harley-Davidson dealers.
Based on the Harley-Davidson Sportster platform, the Seventy-Two introduces Hard Candy Big Red Flake, a sparkling, metal flake color option applied to the fuel tank and fenders. A solo seat and side-mount license plate bracket leave much of the chopped rear fender - and more of that paint - exposed on the Seventy-Two.
The Slim represents the Harley-Davidson Softail motorcycle paired down to its essential elements in the style of custom bobbers of the 1950s, from its trimmed front fender to its narrow rear end, solo seat and minimal chrome. A cross-braced Hollywood handlebar and headlight nacelle are finished in gloss black. Other period styling cues include a "cat's eye" tank console, half-moon rider footboards, and gloss black wheel rims and hubs.

Good Advice for the Job Seeker or Business Owner in the Powersports Industry!

1. Get In the Game:
Pro hockey legend Wayne Gretzky is famous for saying, "You miss 100% of the shots you never take." If you're only watching from the sidelines how do expect anything good to happen? Step 1. Get in the game. Step 2. Take shots.

2. Get Noticed:
Start networking to get noticed but remember that (at first) no one cares about you. It's a harsh reality but I'm willing to bet that aside from your family or significant other, no one--not your boss, colleagues or friends--are staying up late thinking, "I wonder how I can help Julie make more money, find new customers, grow her biz, find a job…"

If you want it, you have to make it happen. No one is going to hand it to you. No one cares about your brilliant idea or how great your services are as much as you, UNLESS it directly benefits THEM. Start networking to build relationships and get noticed.

3. You Get What You Give:
Be respectful of others' time. Remember what Steven Covey said in the classic book, 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, "Seek to understand before you are understood. Don't dominate the conversation. Ask about the other person first. Listen. Then talk and build friendships. If you pitch, do it in 60 seconds. Then wait for a response. If you get asked more about it, then exchange ideas and keep asking about the other person.

4. Keep Your Connections Warm:
How do you feel about the friend who only shows up when he needs to borrow something or help moving furniture? My friend Chris Brogan said, "No one likes desperation in relationships, no one likes it in business either." Keep your connections warm, don't let them get cold.

If it's been 6 months and your first contact with me is a desperation call because you need help, that's not cool. Don't be a fair-weather friend. Keep your connections warm so that when you need help or you can help others you have a strong support system.

5. The Person Who Can Help Most is the Person You Least Expect:
Sometimes you might not want to show up to an event because you don't think the "right people" are there. In my experience the famous, notable, popular, wealthy--whatever people can't help you or don't care about helping. Don't judge a book by its cover, you never know what someone can do for you or who they know that might make all the difference.

6. Pull Your Weight:
You have a responsibility. Remember the Little Red Hen? In the story of the Little Red Hen the Hen decides to make some delicious bread. All of her friends want to eat it but are not willing to help. There's a lot of work to be done and the moral of the story is about pulling your weight, not being selfish and earning rewards.

One of my favorite quotes is "Be the change you want to see in the world." If we really want to create something special, we all need to participate. What can we do when we do it together? The possibilities are endless...

Tech School or Learn on the Job

It’s one of the great debates recently….

Is it worth it to attend a tech school, or should you just get a job at the local shop and work your way up as you learn?

Well, there is no right or wrong answer. It really depends on what risks you want to take and (like most things in life) how hard you are going to apply yourself to be successful.

Let’s take a brief look at both scenarios.

Mechanic Schools

There are a wealth of high-quality mechanic schools in the United States. At these schools, you can earn a degree/diploma in just about any facet of the moto repair industry. The schools are staffed with professional teachers, equipped with the latest technology and tools, and are committed to helping you succeed, if you put forth the effort and are willing to deal with a few hiccups on the way. In a lot of cases, it’s not just technology training – it’s everyday life training.

By attending, applying yourself to the coursework, and graduating from any of these top schools, you have a very good chance of landing a sweet job right out of school.

Of course, you have to pay tuition, which is not cheap – no question about it. Many students qualify for financial aid to help out, but you are still looking at spending a significant chunk of change to attend most of the top mechanic schools. Looking at it from a different perspective, you are investing in your future, so are you worth it?

Pros:

- you earn a certificate/diploma/degree which shows you can set your mind to a goal and complete it

- you can get highly specialized manufacturer specific raining that makes you very valuable in the industry

- you might be able to secure a job right out of school with a specific dealer or manufacturer

- in some cases you get a good starter set of professional tools

– you make connections with fellow students, teachers, and others in the industry

- you typically get job placement assistance

- many students qualify for financial aid to help pay tuition

- you end up working on vehicles that you worship, and you’re actually happy to wake up in the morning and go to work

Cons:

- you have to pay tuition and possibly student loans after you graduate

-you might not get a job… even with your shiny new diploma in hand

- if you don’t apply yourself 110% in your classes, you might not learn a whole heck of a lot considering how much you paid in tuition (that would be your fault…)

Apprenticeship or Learning on the job

The other road to become a professional mechanic is the tried and true. Learn a good bit tinkering on your own, and then look for an entry level position in a local shop, and work your way up. You can pepper that with taking a few certification courses along the way, and bingo, you might have yourself a nice career.

If you are already good with your hands, own a good set of pro tool, and can find a local shop with a mentor who will teach you the in and outs – then go for it! Get certified here and there over the years to stay current, and you’ll be good to go.

Pros:

- you don’t have to pay tuition

- you might earn an hourly wage while you learn on the job/apprentice

- you might end up taking over for the owner/lead mechanic eventually and run the shop yourself

Cons:

- you might get a very small (or none at all) hourly wage while learning on the job

- the person you are learning from might not know as much as you thought they did.

- you might not learn to do what you really want to be doing(changing tires, oil, etc day in and day out…)

- you have to buy or borrow every last one of your tools yourself

- you might get laid off first since you are the low man on the totem pole

Hopefully this article has given you something to think about. Maybe put things in perspective a bit. Or even made you think of a few things you hadn’t considered. That was the goal.

We need more good, qualified, honest, professional technicians in the industry. Hopefully, whichever road you take, you become one.

What You Need to Know about the New Facebook “Send” Button

Facebook has announced the release of a new open graph tool, the “Send” button, which joins the “Like” button as a social utility across the web. Right on the heels of the 1 year anniversary of the “Like” button, which has been integrated into over 2.5 million websites to date, the “Send” button will enable sharing content from the web with specific sets of people.

What is the “Send” button?

The Send button is a social plugin that, like the “Like” button, websites can use to let users broadcast information they’re consuming on the web to their friends on Facebook. The “Send” button is different from the “Like” button in that “Send” enables private sharing. Where a user hitting the “Like” button within a website publishes a feed post of this activity to his entire list of friends via his public newsfeed, hitting “Send” will enable that user to instead choose the exact people he’d like to share the content with. This linked content can be sent via Facebook message, email, or posted right into a specific Facebook Group’s wall. This addition to open graph sharing abilities will enable greater private sharing and more social sharing among groups of friends. Facebook is already calling it “the easiest way to privately share things with groups and individuals.”

The Send button is a social plugin that websites can use to let people send a link to a friend through Facebook Messages, post it to a Group, or email it to an individual. For example, if you see a Mother’s Day gift idea on 1-800-Flowers.com, you can now send a message or email to your family members to discuss. Or say you’re training for a marathon and you come across a great article about running shoes on The Huffington Post. Now you can share it with your entire running group in just one click.

Interview Blunders

If you’re looking for a new job, have been out of work for a while or have been on dozens of interviews – all to no avail, then here are a few reasons why you might not have been hired. Applying a few ground rules will hopefully stack the odds in your favor next time. So don’t make these mistakes…

Being late

Being late is a really bad sign. Always time your journey and then add 10 minutes.

The Resume From Hell

A badly written, scruffy resume which goes on for ages will never be read, and will never get you an interview.

- Print it on pristine clean paper, keep it short and to the point.

- Add all the relevant information so that an employer knows how to get in touch with you.

- Print it on white paper, with a regular font (i.e. Ariel, Verdana or Times New Roman).

- Include bullet points to save space.

- Include key areas where you have demonstrated expertise or a success.

- Try to keep it under 2 pages.

A Bad Attitude

Remember to be polite and courteous at all times. When asked about your past experiences or why you left your previous job – don’t go on and on about how bad your last boss was or how badly you were treated.

I think the worst nightmare is your phone ringing during an interview, worse than that is having a ring tone that sounds like Lady Gaga, but the fatal mistake would be actually answering it, OR carrying on a lengthy conversation.

Don’t spend the whole interview sitting with your hands behind your head, leaning back in your chair as if to say “yeah, I could do this job standing on my head”. Interviewing Tips
As an interviewer, asking a candidate to tell you about the best boss and the worst boss they ever had can be quite revealing about their attitude towards authority. Some things to look out for in the candidate’s response to this question are:

When describing their best boss, does the candidate mention the boss’s willingness to coach them and to help them learn and grow? This may indicate their desire to learn and can be probed further
Do they mention that the good boss pushed them hard but gave them credit and recognition for doing a good job? Again—perhaps an indicator that they value recognition
Do they focus on describing the good boss as easy going and friendly? This may raise a red flag to investigate further regarding the candidate’s attitudes towards working for a highly directive supervisor
When talking about the worst boss, does the candidate get into the blame game—accusing the ex-boss of causing them to fail? This raises a red flag about the candidate’s willingness to take accountability for their own performance and, at the very least, shows the candidate’s lack of political savvy.

A great follow-up question is to ask, “looking back now, is there anything you could have done to improve your relationship with your supervisor?”
A smart candidate will use this as an opportunity to demonstrate how much they have learned since having this experience with a past boss and will try to make points such as:

At the time, I thought my boss was being over critical of me but I can see now that he was giving me useful feedback—I am much better at accepting feedback now
I now understand more about the pressure my supervisor was under at the time and I can see why he might have appeared so abrupt
If the candidate comes back with a comment such as, “no, there was nothing you could ever to please that SOB”, it may provide another red flag to follow up on regarding their attitudes to authority.

Use broad open ended questions as part of your interview technique—using this technique can get the candidate talking and they may unintentionally reveal strengths and red flags that you might otherwise miss.
